SANE, set up in 1986 and now one of the UK's leading charities concerned with improving the lives of everyone affected by mental illness, employs 31 people. In addition to the many volunteers working at SANELINE, a telephone support service that helps others who feel isolated and helpless by the effects of mental illness, the charity is also engaged in research and raising awareness of all mental illnesses.

It is important that SANE manages its costs effectively so that as much money as possible can be directed to its primary objectives or awareness, research and keeping SANELINE open.
